Family Program

The Travis Mills Foundation’s inaugural Family Program is the basis of all programs held at the Veterans Retreat in Rome, ME.

In fact, the idea for the Family Program was inspired by the experiences of U.S. Army SSG (Ret.) Travis Mills and his wife, Kelsey, while Travis recovered from an IED explosion that took portions of all limbs.

While at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Travis had the opportunity to enjoy adapted sports. It was an exhilarating experience that he was happy to share with his wife. After his recovery, sitting at their kitchen table, the couple decided all recalibrated veterans should experience what Travis did, with their families by their sides. The idea for the Travis Mills Foundation was born.

More About Our Family Program

The Family Program is offered year-round and up to eight families per week stay in the Main House of the Retreat. The experience is geared toward the post-9/11 recalibrated veteran, their spouse and children, or a guest.

While a robust schedule with adapted activities is provided to meet the needs of all, participants aren’t required to join. They are welcome to use the time to rest, relax and reconnect. Activities offered included kayaking, wheelchair basketball, archery, dog sledding, ice fishing, tubing, fishing, art therapy, canoeing, golfing, massage therapy and much more.
