Miles for Mills 2020: Maine

Where it Began-

The Travis Mills Foundation is excited to be gearing up for our 9th annual Miles for Mills 5k. We would like to take a minute to reflect on all of the great memories made and the countless amounts of families that you have helped along the way!

The first-ever Miles for Mills was held on May 28, 2012, at the Cony High School track in Augusta, Maine. The event which had roughly 200 participants in the first year continued to grow year after year. Fast forward to 2019 and we had over 1,500 participants from all over the country!

Why it Began-

The Miles for Mills 5k began after SSG Travis Mills was injured on April 10, 2012, from an IED (improvised explosive device) while on foot patrol in Afghanistan. The explosion took both of his legs and arms and he became one of just five quadruple amputees to survive his injuries in Afghanistan.

The event was originally held to raise money for SSG Travis Mills during his recovery at Walter Reed as he and his family began to search for their new “normal.” In September of 2013, Travis and his wife Kelsey founded the Travis Mills Foundation and quickly knew that this event was here to stay!

Where it’s Going-

Since beginning Miles for Mills in 2012, this has become the signature event for the Travis Mills Foundation. What originally started as an event with just over 200 participants, had grown to over 1,500 people!

This year, the Travis Mills Foundation anticipates roughly 2,000 participants at the event in Downtown Augusta, Maine. With the continued growth of the event in Maine, the Travis Mills Foundation has decided to take it to Travis’s home town of Vassar, Michigan, on May 23, 2020.

Who you’ve helped-

Your fundraising efforts have helped us raise over $500,000 for recalibrated veteran families! With the money raised from the event, you were able to help us bring 128 recalibrated veteran families to our retreat in Rome, Maine.

Your continued support through the Miles for Mills 5k ensures that we are able to continue our mission in supporting recalibrated veteran families. We hope to see you there this Memorial Day!
